Grill the Competition: NYRB Edition

It's summer time and the New York Red Bulls are coming to town. When you think of summer and you think of New York, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Probably either baseball or Coney Island. Either way, we're going to amuse ourselves at this weekend's tailgate with a menu that evokes summertime fun in New York.

Main Dish

Last week we went all fancy with steak and homemade barbecue sauce. This week, we're just going to keep it simple: Nathan's famous beef franks--just like you'd find at the Coney Island amusement park or the concession stands when you went to watch the Babe, Mickey Mantle, and Joltin' Joe hit the ball around the park. To help it feel authentic we'll have the basic toppings: yellow and deli mustard, relish, onions, and sauerkraut. We'll even have some ketchup for those who like that on their hot dogs.

We're keeping it quick and a little on the light side for the sides as well. We'll have cole slaw and some mixed fruit salad.

This weekend, it's really going to be more about the dessert than anything else. We're doing some Italian Ice. It's summer. It's hot. Who doesn't love a frozen treat on a scorching summer late afternoon? Everyone in our tailgate group does.

So yes, this week we're keeping the menu a little simple, but what can we say--New York is a simple kind of town. Too many people, too much traffic, and too many taxes. They could simplify a little and they'd probably enjoy life a little more.

As always, beverages for our tailgate will feature selections from the Hourglass Brewery in Longwood and Orlando Brewing. If you want to come hang out with us, we tailgate under the big tree in Lot A on the northwest corner of the Citrus Bowl by Lake Lorna Doone. Vamos Orlando!
